“Garbo laughs” was the sell-line and, not only that, she played the most beautiful Bolshevik in Hollywood history—or at least until Hedy Lamarr assumed the title role of Comrade X. Saucy and cynical, this archetypal anti-Communist comedy owes more to writer Billy Wilder’s touch than that of director Lubitsch.
