Seventy years of history have officially come to an end: Jeffrey’s Meat Market is closed for good.
In March, Jeffrey Ruhalter announced that he was temporarily closing his meat counter, which had been a fixture of the Essex Street Market since 1940, to deal with some financial issues. Ruhalter had been working overtime to lure in more customers following a drop in sales, but was further hobbled by an imminent rent increase.
Now, The Lo-Down reports that Ruhalter will not reopen his shop, despite the apparent willingness of his landlord, the Economic Development Corporation, to work out a deal with him. The EDC has released a statement saying it “will now move forward with finding a new vendor to reactivate Jeffrey’s former space.” Reactivate, maybe. Replace, never.
