“Are the only punks left now ‘fashion punks’?” Othelo Gervacio says in a statement about “PostBoredom,” his new art show at Fuse Gallery. “No thanks, I’d rather sit at home, listen to sludgy metal and paint something dark.” And that is just what the artist, a graphic designer from Virginia Beach who worked under the guidance of tattoo artist to the stars Scott Campbell, has done. Creating works in response to the frustration he felt with what he perceives to be a shallow, consumerist youth culture, Gervacio, who’s also the founder of the ’zine fan blog Zine-O-Phobia, uses a distinct form of dark imagery and Gothic lettering forms to tap into tattoo culture, metal music, and memories of his own teen angst.
