Dennis Hopper plays an aging outlaw who attempts to go straight in this amiable comic western characterized by its meandering jugband sensibility and plethora of countercultural clichés. Most impressive is the movie’s honest hatred of work. No cowboy ever met a more inglorious end—punching a time clock instead of a steer.
