While the Gowanus doesn’t exactly summon comparisons to Cape Cod, Aaron Lefkove is planning to make its dining options a wee bit more evocative of the New England shore.
Lefkove is one of the owners of Littleneck, which its website bills as “Brooklyn’s first and only classic New England-style beach side seafood shack.” This translates to fried whole belly Ipswich clam rolls, a raw bar, burgers, cold beer, and, heavens to Betsy, a lobster roll. If all goes according to plan, it should open in September.
In a message sent to friends earlier today, Lefkove announced the beginning of a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the restaurant, which is located at 288 Third Avenue, between Carroll and President streets. He and his partners are trying to raise $8,000 by August 10; so far, $3,795 has been pledged.
In the video and materials posted on the campaign site, Lefkove and Co. provide some renderings of the place, which will use “as many recycled, reused, and reclaimed materials as possible” and source its seafood from local and sustainable suppliers — though “scout’s honor, we promise not to get our seafood out of the Gowanus Canal.” (Hey, we hear the bluefish is pretty good …)
The finished restaurant will be 1,200 square feet, all of which the three partners are building themselves; they’re planning to use the Kickstarter funds to buy eco-friendly kitchen equipment, light fixtures, dining-room furniture, and the like. In doing so, they “hope to be part of a chain reaction that will change the way people look at their relationship with the foods they eat and how that fits into the larger picture of the world we live in.” At the very least, they may well change how fried clam rolls fit into the larger picture of Gowanus.
