Kenneth Moreno, Cop Accused of Rape, Sentenced to One Year For Official Misconduct

Kenneth Moreno, the “rape cop” who was acquitted on charges of raping a woman in her apartment in 2008, was sentenced to one year in prison today for official misconduct. Both he and partner Franklin Mata were convicted of misdemeanor official misconduct in May, which carries up to two years in jail. Mata’s sentence has not been announced yet. We’ll update with his sentence and with any comment from the two cops. We’re thinking back this morning to the protest we attended in May of Moreno and Mata’s acquittal, where a rape survivor told us her perspective on the case: “I don’t feel safe. I don’t feel protected.” And in case you missed it, read Graham Rayman’s story about the two cops’ other incident with a young woman.
