Should someone stage an intervention? It’s unlikely that the actors of The Select (The Sun Also Rises), Elevator Repair Service’s Ernest Hemingway adaptation, consume actual booze onstage, but the amount of Pernod, brandy, champagne, vin du pays, bourbon and sodas, and olive-garnished martinis they pretend to drink boggles the liver. Perhaps instead of a cast party, they should join together in a detox regimen. John Colins’s whimsical staging–the group’s rather shorter follow-up to their highly acclaimed Gatz–limns the love triangle among a trio of Lost Generation expatriates: an American journalist (Mike Iveson), a Jewish Princetonian (Matt Tierney), and an appetitive Englishwoman (Lucy Taylor). At New York Theater Workshop, they cut a swathe from Paris to Pamplona to Madrid, always with a bottle close at hand. Salut!
