Dish No. 55: Steel-Cut Oatmeal at the Smile

When it comes to oatmeal, there’s not a whole lot you can do to sex it up. Sure, you can add some fruit or streusel topping, but at the end of the day (or morning, as it were), it’s still really the same old mush. The Smile, however, ingeniously adds rich coconut milk to its steel-cut oatmeal to delightfully nutty and subtly sweet results. Genius — why hadn’t we thought of doing that before!

A tiny hint of cinnamon sweetens the deal, as does a saucer of brown sugar on the side. Topped with fresh strawberries and blueberries, plus a smattering of tiny dried currants, the bowl is a big, decadent way to start the day. It’s very rich — truth be told, we can never finish the whole thing. But maybe that’s just the excuse you need to linger all day at this boho-chic café.
