The Gathering of the Juggalos is an annual four-day camping retreat for followers of Insane Clown Posse that’s currently underway in Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. Juggalos have a long tradition of throwing things at performers they hate, including Southern rapper Bubba Sparxxx and human party Andrew W.K. Last year, walking boob-stick Tila Tequila was assaulted with everything from beer cans to a watermelon allegedly soaked in feces and urine. That same weekend, when Wu legend Method Man kept shouting “Illinois” at the Gathering as if the crowd’s loyalty was geographic, someone in the crowd beaned him in the face, almost knocked him out, drawing blood. This year’s Gathering of the Juggalos so far seems like a mellower affair, in that no performers have actually been hit in the face with trash. But that’s not to say that the Juggalos haven’t tried.
Last night, Lil Jon confronted a sprinkle of debris onstage, though he finished off his show and then returned for a guest-spot during Ice Cube’s set in an Insane Clown Posse shirt. He handled it well, though Juvenile didn’t. Juggalos intermittently threw things at him and he finally got pissed off. “Next motherfucker who throw something up here at me, fuck him up or I’m leaving.” Somebody almost immediately fired a water bottle at his head, so he walked offstage and left the premises right away, in a huff.
But a far funnier thing happened with talent on Thursday. Busta Rhymes was scheduled to perform on the official Gathering at 10pm, but didn’t emerge onstage until after 12:30. The rapper was, by all accounts, running an hour behind: his enormously imposing tour bus didn’t roll into the backstage area at until 11pm. But then when he finally arrived, Mr. Rhymes then refused to come out of his bus for 90 minutes. The reason? Organizers screwed up his rider, we’re told. The problem? Not only was his booze order was wrong, but he didn’t like his pizza. The best part? It had something to do with pineapples.
