Neo-soul progenitor Erykah Badu unveiled her alter-ego, DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown, earlier this year, and with a mixtape supposedly on the way, she has now crossed over into yet another aspect of the genre. For anyone who ever wanted to get a glimpse inside the soul queen’s head, seeing a DJ set provides a rare opportunity. A testament to the ever-expanding possibilities of hip-hop, Badu mines the jazz, rock, and R&B canons to deliver a payload of earth-shaking grooves. Teaming up with soul revivalist Adrian Younge, it should all be a vertiginous rush powerful enough to counteract the effects of any long-term aftershocks.
