Manhattan D.A. Files to Drop Dominique Strauss-Kahn Charges

As expected, Cy Vance Jr.’s office has filed paperwork to drop all charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn in his alleged sexual assault of hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo. The papers were filed at 3:20 p.m. today in Manhattan Supreme Court. Over the course of the last month or so, the D.A.’s office had lost faith in Diallo, who’d been caught in a number of lies and half-truths involving her asylum application and other things.

The prosecutors wrote in the paperwork, which is called a recommendation for dismissal: “The nature and number of the complainant’s falsehoods leave us unable to credit her version of events beyond a reasonable doubt, whatever the truth may be about the encounter between the complainant and the defendant. If we do not believe her beyond a reasonable doubt, we cannot ask a jury to do so.”

Diallo’s side is furious. Her lawyer Kenneth Thompson said after a meeting with prosecutors, “If the Manhattan district attorney, who is elected to protect our mothers, our daughters, our sisters, our wives and our loved ones, is not going to stand up for them when they’re raped or sexually assaulted, who will?” We’ve put in a call at Thompson’s office and will update if we can get any comment.

Will they be able to bring a civil suit against DSK, now that the criminal case is over and done with? How could they be able to keep him in the country for that?

Choire Sicha’s take sums it all up nicely:

If the motion the DA’s office files today resembles this patchwork of weird character/witness issues–and it should contain something more substantial than all this–then I’m not really sure what the point in having a DA is? What a mess: this freakshow was mismanaged by all parties, except apparently the people whose full-time job it was to leak things to the press. Those people should get a raise!

And if you’re interested/depending on how you feel about this case, there’s a rally in support of Nafissatou Diallo outside of the Criminal Court building in Lower Manhattan going on right now.
