Hurricane Irene made landfall in North Carolina at about 7am today. The storm was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, but winds were still recorded at about 90 mph. The storm is expected to continue up the Eastern seaboard to New York, where mandatory evacuations have already been ordered for low-lying coastal areas. A federal judge upheld the perjury charges against Barry Bonds. He was initially charged with perjury in regards to statements he made in 2003 about steroid use. “It is clear from the language of the indictment, as well as from the manner in which the government has proceeded prosecuting this case, that defendant was at risk of being convicted of obstruction of justice on the basis of any and all statements that he made to the grand jury that were evasive, false, or misleading,” wrote the judge in her decision.
