Sure, they peddle pastries at Le Petit Café in Carroll Gardens, and a full menu of toasted sandwiches, burgers, entrée salads, soups, and set breakfasts that include omelets, pancakes, and permutations of oatmeal, but the place really comes into its own with brunches.
From the brunch menu, the huevos rancheros is hardly an authentic version, but it’s tasty, wholesome, and profuse, and it feels like you’re doing yourself a healthy favor eating it.
The eggs are perfectly poached eggs, though they look like ghosts, and perfectly poached eggs are something you don’t see much anymore.
Le Petit Café lingers in the shadow of Buttermilk Channel, and attracts a lower-key crowd. There’s a backyard garden made up to look like an archaeological ruin, and you can while away a few hours there drinking coffee and kibbitzing with friends in a way that wouldn’t happen at Buttermilk. Unfortunately, the pastries are nothing special.
