Looking out the window of a plane, seeing all those little cars and houses down below sure makes us see the big picture with more clarity. Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities gives us a detailed look at life on a small scale. The exhibition features miniature models (some in snow globes with scenes that include doctors’ offices and Jackson Pollock creating a masterpiece) through sculpture and photography, focusing on craftsmanship, design, and visual imaging. The show is organized into four themes: “Unnatural Nature,” work that recreates natural environments; “Apocalyptic Archeology,” work that reveals the darker side of the post-industrial landscape; “Dreams and Memories,” work that captures states of psychological angst; and “Voyeur/Provocateur,” which includes subversively witty scenes–all smart, satirical commentaries on art, culture, and politics.
