After a 10-year hiatus from the New York dining scene, Alison Price Becker is returning to the fray with Alison 18.
Price Becker is best known as the owner of Alison on Dominick, a well-loved Soho restaurant that opened in 1989 and closed in the wake of September 11. Tom Valenti was its original chef, and burnished both his reputation and that of the restaurant with his signature braised lamb shank with white beans. Chefs Scott Bryan, Dan Silverman, and Robert Gurvich succeeded him; as The New York Times reports, Gurvich will head the kitchen of Alison 18.
After she closed Alison on Dominick, Price Becker relocated to the Hamptons to run another of her restaurants. At Alison 18, located at 15 West 18th Street, she’ll serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the menu, according to Gurvich, will be “seasonal, straightforward food.” And, in a blessed departure from contemporary custom, Price Becker assures that small plates are “not my style.”
