Whatever Matthew Barney of Cremaster cycle fame does, you can always count on it to be nothing short of massive. His new show, “DJED,” features large-scale sculptures that are part of a site-specific opera loosely based on Norman Mailer’s 1983 novel Ancient Evenings. The centerpiece of “DJED,” the first New York exhibition of Barney’s “Ancient Evenings” project, which explores reincarnation, is the undercarriage of a 1967 Chrysler Imperial made from 25 tons of molten iron poured from five custom-built furnaces into a mold in the ground at the site of an abandoned steel mill in Detroit.
