Joe McGinniss’ highly anticipated tell-all about Sarah Palin, which you will want to be buying after this — it’s out September 20 — may actually merit all that anticipation. According to the National Enquirer, which seems to have gotten ahold of a galley of (or some savvy publishing sources behind) The Rogue: Searching for The Real Sarah Palin, McGinniss writes that Palin slept with Glen Rice while he was playing basketball at the University of Michigan and she was a sports reporter at Anchorage TV station KTUU. They did it in a dorm room, and she was the aggressor! Also, Palin might enjoy coke now and again. And she allegedly smoked pot — with a professor — in college!
But back to the Glen Rice affair:
This all apparently went down one steamy Thanksgiving weekend in 1987, a year before Palin eloped with Todd, who was already around back then (ouch).
A publishing source told The ENQUIRER that McGinniss claims Sarah had a “fetish” for black men at the time and he quotes a friend as saying Sarah had “hauled (Rice’s) ass down.”
McGinniss has Rice confirming the one-night stand. Additionally, the Enquirer says Sarah had a six-month affair with Todd’s business partner Brad Hanson, and that that affair led to the dissolution of the men’s snowmobile dealership (but not, clearly, the Palin marriage).
Perhaps they were kept together by the drugs, which Sarah and Todd were both, McGinniss writes, fans of: “before Palin became Alaska governor she was seen snorting cocaine off an overturned 55-gallon oil drum while snowmobiling with pals.” He also quotes “a Palin family friend as saying that husband Todd Palin also snorted coke, describing him as ‘on the end of the straw plenty.'”
Shocking! Horrifying! Hypocritical at best! And, yet, why is it that the effect of this news is a feeling of the first ever brief and grudging respect we have ever possessed for Sarah Palin? If all this is true, or even parts of it are…Girl can party.
(And/or McGinniss can sell books.)
David Larabell, McGinniss’s agent, wouldn’t comment on the excerpt, but did say, according to the Daily News,
“Also, I haven’t seen the National Enquirer article. I don’t know about this instance, but they often get these reports right.”
The Palins have not responded.
