Amish Scofflaws Nabbed in Buggy Safety-Triangle Scandal

Those photos are the single best group of mugshots in the history of the world. They’re also as perfect an illustration as you could ask for of what can go wrong when the Amish lifestyle bumps up against that of the modern world; these men were arrested for refusing to pay fines after for not putting orange safety triangles on their buggies. They consider them too modern.

The men were booked Monday night into the Graves County jail in Kentucky. They’re all members of the Swartzentruber Amish sect, which is the strictest. Swartzentrubers will attach reflective tape to their buggies but they won’t use the safety triangles, which are required by law.

The guys were all held in jail for between three and 10 days. What’s unclear is whether they were all brought in separately, or … whether they were all rounded up in some kind of safety triangle sting?

In other Amish news, a 77-year-old Amish man in Ohio is accused of swindling fellow Amish farmers for years, defrauding his neighbors of tens of millions of dollars. He’s the “Amish Bernie Madoff.”
