Here at Fork in the Road, we enjoy nothing more than stuffing our faces with food. So, anytime there’s a food festival or culinary market, we’re there. This past summer marked the launch of Smorgasburg, an outdoor food fest held every Saturday on the Williamsburg waterfront between North 6th and North 7th streets. And although a visit to an outdoor market may seem like a warm-weather activity, we’re more excited for autumn because of fewer crowds and overall nicer temperatures for eating (it’s hard to scarf down fried food when the sun is frying you, no?). 10. Salted Caramel Macaroons from Danny Macaroons: For so long, we’d considered macaroons to be those sad, dry lumps of dessicated coconut we were forced to eat at our Jewish relatives’ houses during Passover. Then we sampled the coconut cookies from Danny Macaroons and had our minds blown. His renditions are moist and chewy and not overly sweet or possessing that weird faux-coconut aftertaste we associate with macaroons. Better yet, he gussies them up with fancy flavors, like our beloved salted caramel, which makes anything it touches even tastier. Macaroons are no exception.

9. Kale Salad from Skytown: Who says food-fair fare has to be bad for you? Freshen up with one of the several rotating kale salads available from Skytown. A recent trip found the leafy green alongside Craisins, avocado, grapefruit, and cheese — the perfect antidote to the sugary macaroon you just wolfed down.

8. Fried Anchovies from Bon Chovie: You’d think that fried anchovies might be a hard sell amid dougnuts and bacon on a stick, but that’s not stopping lines from thronging at Bon Chovie. The little fish are coated in bread crumbs and served with spicy mayo. The fishiness gets tamed, and the moist little swimmers go down easy.

7. Doughnuts from Dough: And speaking of doughnuts, no trip to the festival would be complete without a fried ring of dough or two. What are arguably the city’s best versions are baked in a little shop in Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy. You Manhattanites who haven’t made the trek for warm, yeasty delicious rings flavored with dulce de leche and blood orange (both pictured), get a move on.

6. Hot Dog from the Meat Hook: Brooklyn butchers the Meat Hook give the old-fashioned dirty water dog a culinary revamp, stuffing their signature wiener inside a bun, topping the whole shebang with kraut and chili. Excessive? Maybe, but well worth it.

5. Watermelon and Ricotta Sandwich from I8NY: A refreshing change from the meat-and-cheese sammies that abound, this sandwich layers sliced watermelon, eggplant, and ricotta in a homemade bun, slathered with herby pesto.

4. Banh Trang Tron from Queen’s Dahn Tu: Having lived in Vietnam, we have a soft spot for anything showered in herbs, chiles, peanuts, and fried shallots. This rice paper and mango salad is no exception. The juices from the melon soften the sheets of rice paper, while the nuts add a bit of crunch. Each bite explodes with flavors and textures.

3. 10-Layer Cemita from Cemitas: Holy crap! Could this sandwich be any bigger? This is a whopper that knows the motto “Go Big or Go Home.” The massive Mexican sandwich that’s literally the size of a baby’s head packs in the avocado, tomato, pickled onions, white cheese, black beans, lettuce, fried chicken, and so much more. One caveat: Sample this at the end of your Smorgasburg visit, or else you’ll be so stuffed you won’t be able to sample anything else.

2. Brisket Sandwich from Mighty Quinn’s BBQ: This is another of the vendors whose line is always impossibly long, but people know a good thing when they see it. Mighty Quinn’s shows off its big-ass smoker, and dishes up one fine brisket sandwich covered in tangy-sweet barbecue sauce. It’s worth the wait.

1. Chana Chaat from Dadar Station: It was tricky figuring out what snack at Smorg sates us the most, but each time we visit, we find ourselves unable to leave without indulging in the chana chaat from Dadar Station. Perfectly cooked chickpeas hide under a tamarind-yogurt sauce, caressed by a shower of fresh cilantro, sliced chiles, and puffed grains. It’s savory and crunchy, lashed with heat, perfect for those hot days, and also those which will soon be cool. Go get one. Now.
