Dir. Wes Anderson (2001).
A comic fairytale about a J.D. Salinger family living in the memory of their F.A.O. Schwartz childhood, Anderson’s ensemble piece is as at once elusive in its mood and homey in its characterizations. For all his elaborate gags, Anderson’s humor is essentially wistful; beneath the layers of cleverness here, there’s an underlying melancholy.
