Spirited Away

by

Dir. Hiyao Miyazaki (2001).
Anime master Miyazaki cooks up one nutty fruitcake—an Alice in Wonderland story in which a ten-year-old girl finds herself in a literal ghost town that functions as a cosmic bathhouse. The movie is packed with incident and populated by sensational creatures—frogs in kimono, rolling ducks, bouncing heads, twin harpies, squeaky fuzzballs, living blobs of yuck. The movie’s funny, inexplicable transformations are closer to vintage Fleischer Bros than Disney.
