Jeff Mangum

While Jeff Mangum’s indispensability can certainly be explained in terms of idiosyncratic sonic streams—brackish bass wraiths, effects-pedal panics, electrified folk chords ablaze, gooseflesh-provoking combinations of the aforementioned—much of the Neutral Milk Hotel frontman’s appeal lies in his voice, a raspy, reedy thing that can mine profundity from what seem to be provocative nonsense syllables. That Mangum rarely shares his gift only deepens the anti-cult of personality surrounding the man and his small but devastating catalogue.
