You can’t get to heaven by booking a ticket on Expedia or Hotwire, but the 18th-century poet and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg claimed to have racked up a host of frequent-flyer miles traveling there. Indeed, he filled at least 30 volumes with his celestial travel diaries. In 1985, inspired by this ample source material and an even more ample supply of white turkey feathers, the director and choreographer Ping Chong led audiences on an otherworldly jaunt modeled on Swedenborg’s. Now, to celebrate La MaMa’s 50th anniversary, Chong has revived this exotic travelogue in Angels of Swedenborg. As Swedenborg’s modern-day descendant taps away at a computer screen, eight angels and two spirits swirl around him—a vision of the avant-garde in paradise.
