Across the 100 or so CMJ showcases that will have taken place in the days leading up to Jonathan Richman’s unaffiliated Bell House performance, you’ll find two unavoidable constants: secret, almost always disappointing “special guests” and ambitious twentysomethings checking their smart phones for tweets and texts. On the other hand, when Richman (whose “You Can Have a Cell Phone That’s OK But Not Me” is about exactly what it sounds like) performs, any owners of BlackBerrys will surely keep them in their pockets out of respect. And though we don’t expect any special guests, the rock ’n’ roll vet will certainly not disappoint.
