Obama’s 2012 Campaign Starts Tumblr, Addresses Trolls

There are still 376 days before voters hit the polls to decide the next president, but the Obama 2012 campaign has already launched their Tumblr account. It went up today, and they call it a “huge collaborative storytelling effort” in the inaugural post. The Obama campaign used Facebook and other digital platforms to their advantage in 2008, and they are utilizing any technological tools that have come to prominence since then for the reelection campaign. In related news, Michele Bachmann just bedazzled her Gateway 2000 laptop.

The site’s goal is for it to be used as a communicative device between voters and the campaign, with visitors asked to upload photos, share stories, and even “pass along jokes.” They probably want people to click the big red “DONATE” button as well.

While it’s nice to view the Internet as a “huge collaborative storytelling effort,” it is, in actuality, the most terrifying and sordid place in the world. The Obama 2012 Tumblr team has acknowledged and accounted for this. “There will be trolls among you: this we know,” the first post reads, “We ask only that you remember that we’re people–fairly nice ones–and that your mother would want you to be polite.”

This will be one hell of a cultural artifact as soon as we elect the first troll president. [Tumblr]
