Spotted At CMJ: Asher Roth, Nick Catchdubs, Fat Tony, And King Krule On Their Survival Strategies

With more than a thousand bands in the city for CMJ, there’s a strong chance you’ll happen to run into a musician on the streets, hanging out after a show, or taking advantage of an open bar at a blog party. We checked in with artists during the festival to see how they handled the chaos of it all.

The artist: Asher Roth
Where he’s from: NY via Philly

Where are you going next?

I don’t know. I’m probably going to wander for a little bit and see what’s up. I have no set plans. It would be nice to see Trash Talk but I think that’s out of the question. If not, I’ll probably go to sleep. It’s almost 4 a.m., you know?

What bands do you want to see at CMJ?

This is going to sound so lame. I honestly haven’t been able to check it out yet and see who’s playing and all. I gotta run to Indiana and do a show and shit so I’m being extremely selfish and stubborn. Like I said, I’d like to see Trash Talk and A$AP Rocky and all them. The people who are doing some cool shit, some loud shit, some obnoxious shit. I love that.

Odd Future was at Terminal 5. It’s cool. It’s all about having fun and expressing yourself and Tyler’s obviously a really expressive kid. I think that Earl Sweatshirt is one of the best rap names of all times personally. So, yeah, it’s all love.

What non-CMJ thing would you recommend for out-of-towners to do while they’re in New York?

Go eat some food. New York has got so much food. My man just put me on to Punjabi Deli. It’s on First Ave and First St. Otherwise, yeah, just explore. That’s the cool thing about New York. You can wander down any street and find something to do.

What’s in your survival kit when doing a festival / back-to-back shows?

Water. Water, water, water. Granola bars. Um, my iPod. My DJ, Recognize, because Recognize is an Eagle Scout. So he’s definitely a part of my survival kit. You know, that’s about it. Water and Recognize. He’s a human Swiss army knife, for real.

The band: Nick Catchdubs, DJ / Fool’s Gold co-founder
Where he’s from: Brooklyn

Where are you going next?

After the Fader Fort I am going to go home and watch The Wonder Years and go to sleep.

What’s been your favorite show of CMJ so far?

So far my favorite show has been the Converse/Rubber Tracks party last night with Twin Shadow. I just kind of played a bunch of rock weirdo stuff between bands. And then Twin Shadow played and it was awesome. He’s a handsome dude. And then I played party music afterwards for everyone who stuck around. It was really fun.

Besides your own artists, who are you trying to see or what’s been your favorite act so far?

The best act I’ve seen so far is definitely Twin Shadow. The most surprising act I’ve seen has been the band Friends, who are super hipstery rnb. I wanted to be mad but they were pretty awesome.

What’s in your survival kit for the week?

Water. Besides water? Yo, you know what saved my ass? I DJed this YouTube panel discussion with Ryan Leslie and that couple that do that Chris Brown cover on YouTube. [Karmin.] It was a YouTube panel about people who do covers on YouTube.

Anyways, they didn’t have DJ equipment and so they were like, “We’re going to cancel your DJ set.” And I was like, “No, don’t do that.” So I got this little Vestax controller for Serato Itch. It’s called the Vestax 300 or something and then like magic I could DJ again! Annnnnnnd I have to DJ now!

The band: Fat Tony
Where they’re from: Houston

What are you doing next?

I’m playing two shows. The first is the BPM show on Houston that my homeboy Jason Scott Henderson is putting it on. After that I’m doing a show with me, Ninjasonik, Japanther and a whole bunch of others who are gonna rage in that shit.

What’s the best show that you’ve been to at CMJ?

I can’t even lie. I don’t know where I’ve been at all but I know that I’m here right now. You feel me?

What non-CMJ thing do you want to do while you’re in New York?

I wanna smoke some of the finest weed New York has to offer. I want to pay my respects to all the New York legends that are out there doing their thing. And I want to drink a lot of rum. Whiskey is tight too. Shout out to all the rich people who put money into the open bars for CMJ. Y’all are doing a great job of helping me get faded.

What makes up your survival kit for CMJ?

I survive strictly on pizza, soda water, marijuana, alcohol, and good vibes. And my friends. Yes, I am crashing at a friend’s place. I haven’t reached the status of having rich people pay for my hotel just yet but hopefully I will next year.

What’s in your pockets right now?

In my pockets right now? A yellow comb and a beautiful phone. It’s a smart-phone, by the way, because I’m a smart guy.

What was the last thing you ate?

Two slices of pizza and a combination of Tropicana fruit punch and Tropicana lemonade. That’s all I’ve eaten today and probably all I will eat for the rest of the night.

The band: King Krule
Where they’re from: London

What are you doing next?

Not sure, really. We haven’t got plans. We don’t know what we’re doing. We’ve got a good management team that tells us what’s going on with us. Otherwise we’re doing what we like. Just seeing where the wind takes us. We don’t got a plan. Tomorrow we’ve got a gig at Shea Stadium.

What’s the best show you’ve been to at CMJ?

We’ve been here for three or four days and have seen a few bands. Trash Talk was the best. We saw them on Wednesday. We’re excited to see everyone on our gig tomorrow – Dean from True Panther set it up, so it should be good.

What non-CMJ thing do you want to do while you’re in New York?

I don’t know. Go up Empire State? [Band interjects to say “NO MAN, NO.”] We’re basically just going with whatever happens. We’re just chilling.

What’s in your survival kit for the week?

Let’s see what we have. [They empty their pockets to reveal a red satin sleep mask, three packages of American Spirit rolling tobacco, and rolling papers.]

What was the last thing you ate?

SUBWAY! [Laughs.] My sandwich was chicken, onions, black olives, salad, and ketchup. He got Italian. And what did you guys get? Meatball marinara.
