The above screengrab (via Reddit) from Mountain Dew’s Facebook page shows a man’s apparent cry for help. Naturally, this has spread around the internet, and people have found it anywhere from hilarious to disturbing and offensive. Runnin’ Scared got in contact with Michael Abraham, the man who made the above post, and he says it was all a joke. Why would he do that to DEW Nation?
In an Email sent to Rosie Gray, Abraham said the following about whether the post was a joke and why he chose Mountain Dew’s Facebook page:
Yes, it was a joke. I’ve been following the Mountain Dew facebook page for a while now because I think Mountain Dew is an inherently funny brand. I think its ratio of brand content to food content is more than maybe any other marketed food, and the relationship between Mountain Dew and its demographic seems like a really surreal late capitalism-specific thing. If you check out the videos on their facebook page I’m sure you’ll see what I mean. I’m a little bit disappointed that everyone seems to be misinterpreting it as a viral ad, but it really was just supposed to be a funny corporation interaction.
It was just “funny corporate interaction,” after all. Had he aimed for “funny and nuanced corporate interaction,” he would’ve saved the poor person who runs Mountain Dew’s Facebook page a whole lot of angst.
