What’s in a name? When your name is Ray and you’re a pizzeria, well, everything. Greenwich Village landmark Famous Ray’s Pizza shuttered earlier this fall, citing a rent increase and loss of lease. Now according to a sign in the window, it seems like a branch of Famous Original Ray’s Pizza will be opening in the location of Famous Ray’s at 465 Sixth Avenue, bound to perplex pizza lovers for years to come.
Famous Original Ray’s Pizza has several branches throughout the city and offers the standard selection of slices and pies. Though perhaps none as cheesy as the Famous Ray’s vegetable slice.
And just a few blocks north, frozen yogurt purveyor 16 Handles will soon be launching its fourth New York City branch at 498 Sixth Avenue (646-524-5904; other locations are on the Upper West Side, on the Upper East Side, and in the East Village). In addition to the 16 flavors of fro-yo and 40 assorted toppings, take-home ice cream cakes and quarts will be available for purchase. And the chain has its sights set on rapid expansion. According to its website, Astoria is set to get a 16 Handles at 37-07 30th Avenue, and Williamsburg and the Bronx are soon to follow. Who says you can’t eat frozen treats in the winter?
