One of our snappier local Balkan brass bands, Raya consists of Greg Squared (clarinet and saxophone), Ben Syversen (trumpet), Matthew Fass (accordion), Don Godwin (tuba), and EJ Fry (tupan drum). They begin in the Balkans then reach around to Macedonia, Romania, Greece, and elsewhere with sousta, zeybeck, and other regional dance tunes played with gusto in asymmetrical time signatures. The Sway Machinery, an intermittently brilliant semi-supergroup led by Balkan Beat Box guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood, blends Ethiopian rhythms, Jewish liturgical music, and Mali blues into a compelling goulash.
