New York sophisticates won’t soon forget that this slot belonged to Bobby Short for 36 years, but for December, the amiable performer is keeping the holiday joy bubbling with the same Champagne effervescence. Wherever Bobby is, he must be singing his approval: The relative newcomer sticks to the standards, which he delivers in a gravelly baritone and with a smile for all occasions. Keep in mind that this is the guy who produces Rod Stewart’s CD homages to the Great 20th Century Songbook, teaching the rock crooner everything he knows.
