To celebrate its first six months of service, the East River ferry is offering free rides all day today. Free coffee was also apparently handed out this morning to commuters while the rest of us crammed ourselves into packed subway cars.
Terry Sellers, 62, a lawyer from Williamsburg, said she looks forward to her daily trip on the ferry.
“It’s changed my life,” she said. “It’s like taking a little vacation on my way to work every day. It’s so much faster and more pleasant than taking the train.”
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn was there at Wall Street’s Pier 11 shaking hands with commuters this morning. She reportedly said, “We’re sending a message that ferry service here on the East River…is a terrific idea that is long overdue.”
The ferry is gratis all day today and will run every half hour, except between 4:30 and 7 p.m. when it will run every 20 minutes.
