The pianist’s Live in Marciac was an inch away from making my Best of 2011 list: His inherent drama works well in a solo setting. But interplay is addictive, and the famed cohesion of Mehldau’s trio (Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard) sometimes makes it seem like one entity is speaking. If jazz is about sharing, these three define the act, especially onstage.
