With Congress in a mule-like deadlock, this Southern rock jam band’s name suddenly seems to make a lot more sense. So what is a government mule really? One explanation is the mule part of the “40 acres and a mule” policy during Reconstruction. Or it could be the sterile symbol for the Libertarian Party, easily mistaken for the Democratic Party’s ass. If you ask hirsute frontman Warren Haynes, he’ll tell you it’s the “Mississippi colloquialism” Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe used to describe James Brown’s wife’s derriere when she jumped on stage in Memphis. But basically, it’s a synonym for ear-splitting awesomeness.
