Since reuniting in 2009, Phish has settled into a comfortably professional groove, staking out dazzling new musical territory and engaging in night-long conceptual head-fuckery (such as 2010’s pre-Halloween Led Zep tease fest) just often enough to keep even its most critical fans engaged. Basically, they’re the Prairie Home Companion of arena rockers, as their fifth New Year’s Eve run at the Garden should demonstrate, and there’s no shame in that.
