“I don’t fuck much with the past, but I fuck plenty with the future,” Patti Smith said on “Babelogue,” a spoken-word number five songs into 1978’s Easter. The statement has rung less true in recent years, which have seen the gracefully aging rocker release an album of covers, Twelve, and include more oldies in her increasingly retro live sets. Either way, Smith’s annual New Year’s Eve gigs put her on the threshold of both, at once looking back on a year gone by and forward to the one fast approaching. Unfortunately, this three-night run of holiday shows will be her last, so come 2012, we will have to fuck with the past and future all on our own.
