Almost a decade after Lil Jon taught the country to get crunk, what has happened to everyone’s favorite onomatopoeic Southern subgenre? On the one hand, it has returned to the underground, where producers like Mr. Collipark continue to craft innovative, irresistible dance tracks for a slew of journeyman rappers. (His Can I Have the Club Back Please? remains one of the year’s most overlooked mixtures.) On the other hand, it has assimilated into the global pop lingua franca and launched Miami’s Pitbull, the face of crunk classics such as “Bojangles” and “Shake (Remix),” into international stardom. Tonight, Mr. 305 touches down for a one-off gig at Roseland Ballroom.
