Roy Ayers

by

Besides Gil-Scott Heron, vibraphonist Roy Ayers is a key link between jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. Jazz fusion might have been a ‘70s fad, but Ayers was one of the few who elevated it to the level of real artistry and keeps reminding us that it can still be cool. Snoop Dogg, Nas, and Common have all paid homage to the soul progenitor by sampling his beats, and hip-hop producer Pete Rock celebrated his contribution to the form at shows organized by jazz crossover presenter Revive Da Live. In the January doldrums, he’s always there to remind us that “Everyone Loves the Sunshine.”
