No, this probably won’t help your newly minted New Year’s resolutions — if you haven’t broken them already. However, our resolution was not to hold back juicy food-world gossip, so we’re obliged to share with you this scoop. Don’t shoot the messenger.
Soho bakery Dominique Ansel has only been open a few months, but already the Daniel expat is turning out pastries that are the talk of the town. Crisp canelés. Chewy macarons. Warm, just-out-of-the-oven, madeleines, and more.
However, if you happen to pop into the bakery next week, you’ll notice a few extra items on the menu. That’s right, Dominique Ansel is expanding its offerings. And not by one or two new pastries but 10 interesting and mouthwatering treats. Five sweets and five sandwiches.
A milk chocolate bun oozing chocolate ganache. Then there’s Dominique’s favorite, “a French double-decker cream puff” Salted Pistachio Religeuse, as well as a cinnamony spiral creation dubbed the Arlette. Chouquette balls are tiny puff pastries that are poppable and perfect for a snack on the go, or little children. But it’s the Claudette that’s set to rival the bakery’s highly touted kouign amann. A unique creation, this cream puff holds a double dose of filling — Colombian coffee and mascarpone.
If you’re stopping in for a savory, you’ll find a handful of addition to the menu. Two tartines — cucumber and winter vegetable — a spicy turkey panini, a tuna bagnat, and a truffle grilled cheese. Someone didn’t get the message that truffle oil is the condiment faux pas of the moment.
Also in the works are new macaron flavors, because this bakery pretty much wants to make everyone fat.
