Often, big-name DJ sets serve little purpose, allowing the artist behind the boards to boost his or her financial and cultural capital at the expense of a barely shuffling audience. Madlib, however, is different. In fact, the DJ booth might be this producer cum rapper cum amateur ethnomusicologist’s optimum environment, allowing him to forgo the rhymes that buoyed albums like the Lootpack’s self-titled debut and focus exclusively on the beats, which might be drawn anywhere from the heart of Botswana to Stax-era Memphis.
