Last night’s National Board of Review dinner at Cipriani 42nd Street was a long but rewarding evening filled with gratitude and sass.
Presenter Rosie O’Donnell ripped into Lars von Trier‘s movies and said it was OK for her to trash him; “I’ll never work for him — or Woody Allen. Pedophile? Who’s to say?”
Daniel Radcliffe presented an honor to Harry Potter producer David Heyman and remembered when he was 10. “I thought, ‘Why is this strange man staring at me?'”
Amy Ryan handed supporting actress to The Descendants‘ Shailene Woodley by declaring, “There’s something about the way Shailene says ‘twat’ that in and of itself is deserving of this award tonight.”
And Frances McDormand — presenting to pal Tilda Swinton — admitted she hadn’t taken a shower and said, “I hate this shit, but here I am. I’m here because of her.”
Tilda herself was not to be outdone. The We Need to Talk About Kevin star cracked to the crowd, “Let’s all look forward to the Broadway musical of The Book of Kevin!”
But this was turning into a raunchy musical of its own.
Michael Fassbender made a joke about his privates, George Clooney made a joke about Fassbender’s privates — and there was lots of serious film talk, too.
And swag for days!
And did I mention that Rosie sprinkled in a reference to her arch-nemesis Donald Trump?
(“He’s a dick. He thinks I’m a fat dyke.”)
