Saxophonist D’Angelo’s expressionistic wails give bluster a lyrical slant, as even the harshest moments arrive with poignancy in hand. His connection with brassmeister Knuffke seems like a smart move: Both have a way of turning their bent bop into engaging episodes of pure sound, whether playing a tune or walking the freedom trail.
