5 Pies to Stuff Yourself Silly on Today, a/k/a National Pie Day


Today is National Pie Day, woot woot. While Fork in the Road believes that this holiday should really coincide with the other Pi Day (March 14), any day that celebrates the bounty of baked, filled pastries is still pretty damn awesome. So how should you celebrate this momentous day? Stuffing yourself silly with pie, obviously. Here are five favorites to choose from, both newcomers and old faves.

Lemon Meringue Pie at North End Grill: The desserts are fairly classic at Danny Meyer and Floyd Cardoz’s new Financial District eatery, with a fine lemon chiffon number. Banoffee Pie at the Spotted Pig: There is really no better pie flavor than banoffee, a heavenly combo of bananas, cream, and toffee, and there is no better place that does this English favorite than April Bloomfield’s West Village gastropub. 314 West 11th Street, 212-620-0393

Key Lime Pie from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies: Key lime pie might be a Florida tradition, but you can still find a mighty-tasty version north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Perfectly tangy and with a great graham cracker crust, Steve’s babies are worth the trek to Red Hook. 204 Van Dyke Street, Brooklyn, 718-858-5333

Banana Cream Pie at the Dutch: It’s pretty much impossible for pastry chef Kierin Baldwin to produce a bad pie. Each of her flaky desserts (salted lime, apple, pumpkin) are downright delicious, but it’s hard not to beat the banana cream pie. Black Bottom Oatmeal Pie at Four & Twenty Blackbirds: One of the more unusual pies at this Gowanus pie shop from sisters Emily and Melissa Elsen, this beauty is chock-full of oatmeal, dense and gooey, and with a super-flaky crust. 439 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-499-2917
