Watch out, Mr. Mayor! The United Federation of Teachers is launching an ad campaign today that attacks Mike Bloomberg — who has loudly criticized the union at a handful of public appearances this year. At his State of the City speech earlier this month, the mayor went after the UFT for insisting on provisions that make it harder to remove ineffective teachers. Some said his language was unnecessarily confrontational to teachers. He’s not being crazy — students are the priority, not the teachers, he said the next day.
And it goes on and on and on.
The 30-second ad that starts today goes after Bloomberg for the Cathie Black debacle and his efforts to cut teachers.
“Ten years as Mayor, and Mike Bloomberg still doesn’t get it,” the ad starts.
“Cathie Black. Fudged education test scores. Closing scores. Parents shut out of the process.”
“Bloomberg said, in a perfect world, he’d cut the number of teachers in half, doubling class size.” (Yeah, he did say that.)
“If you really want to do right by our kids, you’ll work with teachers and parents and stop playing politics with our schools,” the ad concludes.
The spot will air today through next Monday on broadcast stations and cable television networks in the New York area. Watch out — it will run during many popular programs, the UFT notes, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, Letterman, the Daily Show, Saturday Night Live, Knicks games, Top Chef, Project Runway, Jeopardy, Morning Joe, Meet the Press, and Inside City Hall.
That means 7,261,231 viewers will see it an average of 6.9 times.
According to City and State, where we first saw the ad this morning, UFT President Michael Mulgrew said, “This is our way of saying, ‘Enough with this already’…Let’s try to do something based on actual research that is going to work, instead of whatever your political ideologies are.”
