A glimpse of the facade during the build-out stage
Monday marks the opening of Tortaria, a Mexican-themed place that concentrates on tortas, the signature south-of-the-border sandwich. The place occupies the former premises of Buona Sera, a long-running red-sauced Italian spot.
The restaurant will be made up to look like a grocery store, and, according to the press release, will specialize in “tortas (Mexican sandwiches), taquitos, and regional comfort foods.” Tequila will apparently be a co-specialty. Tortas will be priced from $7.81 to $8.73.
The place seats 64, will have an active carryout operation, and is being cheffed by Alejandro Vicuna, who comes from Tlapetlahuaya, Mexico.
Sounds good, but, less encouragingly, the place partly shares an ownership and management team with Caliente Cab Company, which, apart from great guacamole, makes some of the worst Mexican food in town. More sanguinely, other members of the team have experience at Rosa Mexicano and Blue Smoke.
Here’s hoping Tortaria lives up to its potential.
