While browsing online for Valentine’s Day cookie options, I stumbled upon a Serious Eats post from 2010 in which Roasting Plant’s cookies were crowned as the best chocolate chip cookies in New York City. I was skeptical. In fact, with Levain Bakery, Blue Ribbon Bakery Market, Milk & Cookies Bakery, and a branch of Birdbath as just some of its competition, I wasn’t even sure it was the best cookie option on the West Side of Manhattan, much less the entire city.
Distracted by the place’s excellent coffee, I never even noticed the cookies in the bakery box by the counter. At $2.50 apiece, they’re of the chewy, flat variety, contain healthy-sized chocolate chunks and a good amount of salt — excellent companions to a café au lait. But for those partial to thick, crumbly cookies, Roasting Plant’s won’t cut it.
Also, if you’re looking for a flashy Valentine’s Day cookie box, you might want to head somewhere else: The barista at Roasting Plant told me that the store doesn’t do anything special with its cookies for the holiday. But if you’re fine with going low-key for the big day, you can call ahead for a freshly baked box.
