It’s worth remembering that Sarah Lipstate is an avant-garde guitarist and a filmmaker, and with each successive sonic dispatch, her sound becomes less Stan Brakhage, more Jim Jarmusch. Red Rainbows juggled hyperventilating noise and bathetic languor; Desert Fires offered meditations on the synthesizer’s Quaalude-level potential. Fragile, frosty, and charmingly tentative, last year’s Glacial Glow then found Lipstate approaching songwriting from an almost pointillist perspective, all quick strokes, siren-song themes, and strategically deployed amplifier fuzz.
