Vegan cuisine can often leave much to be desired in the flavor and excitement departments. Kale salads and sprout medleys can only go so far. Which is why we were pleased to discover Gingersnap’s Organic (170 East 7th Street, 212-533-9939), a newish (opened in November) casual café in the East Village that dishes up a colorful, flavorful selection of snacks and light meals — all of which just so happen to be organic, vegan, gluten-free, and devoid of any fillers or preservatives. Prices are a bit higher than at the average lunch spot, with most dishes $13 to $15, and smaller nibbles around $10. We popped in for a quick lunch recently and quite enjoyed the nori rolls, which look like sushi and act like sushi, but aren’t quite exactly sushi.
The $10 dish features avocado, bell pepper, and sprouts, all tucked inside “rice” made from finely chopped cauliflower. Soy, pickled ginger, and wasabi stand guard to add additional flavor. The dish is light, for sure, but definitely flavorful and actually very reminiscent of veggie sushi. It’s the kind of dish that makes you feel healthier after just one bite. Which also gives you a pretty good reason to splurge for dessert. (Perhaps at the non-vegan-but-still-awesome Big Gay Ice Cream Shop, located just a few doors down.)
