When Young Jeezy was on the map way back in 2005, mixtapes still came as CDs, and only the best (his breakout Trap or Die, for instance) left city limits. Today, with websites such as DatPiff making them available to anyone with an Internet connection and the patience to click through a few pop-ups, mixtapes circulate quickly and easily, reaching listeners around the world in less time than it takes you to say Metro PCS 5 Boro Takeover Tour. The Hot 97–sponsored concert series brings Jeezy—who’s still on top, but now supplementing those mixtapes with actual, buy-it-in-a-store albums like last year’s Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition—to Irving Plaza for the kind of live experience that can’t be downloaded off the Internet.
