American Dreamzzz opened last night at Gallery Bar, located at 120 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. It was a creative success for artist Damon DeWitt, www.damondewitt.com. Mister President gave a speech about how everyone deserves the American Dream, a performance group interpreted today’s nuclear family, and Dallas Cowgirl Cheerleaders served up bubbles and McDonald’s Apple Pies. All this while the familiar sound of the American President’s theme song played in the background. Damon grew up in Florida but took his time traveling the world after graduating college before settling into Brooklyn. This show is Damon’s personal American Dream playing out for the world to see. Creating a show of such magnitude showcasing more than just a room full of silent people certainly made for a successful night. The work is driven by politics, responding to the times, the homeland of America and basic Americana. Playing on the ideas that make this country what it is and the stereotypes that take over the idea of “America”.
