Not long ago, a British newspaper interview with Stephen Sondheim mentioned that Meryl Streep was a rumored possibility to portray the Witch in the revival of Steve’s Into the Woods, playing the Delacorte this summer.
No, not Miranda Priestly. Another witch.
Well, Sondheim didn’t confirm or deny the buzz, but interestingly said, “We will see. I think she’d be great.”
That set excited little heads spinning all around town.
Meanwhile, a good friend of Meryl was just cast.
Amy Adams — who co-starred with the multi-Oscar winner in Doubt and Julie & Julia — is going to play the Baker’s Wife.
And they’ve also announced the following cast members:
Jack Broderick (Narrator), Gideon Glick (Jack), Cooper Grodin (Rapunzel’s Prince), Ivan Hernandez (Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf), Tina Johnson (Granny), Josh Lamon (Steward), Jessie Mueller (Cinderella), Laura Shoop (Cinderella’s Mother), and Tess Soltau (Rapunzel).
Which pretty much leaves out … the Witch!
So smart theater queens everywhere are sipping from a big punch bowl of fantasy juice and imagining that the Public Theater folks are deep in talks with Meryl to nail her down for a summer fling in Central Park before she starts filming August: Osage County.
And as our blog’s Vodka Stinger points out, Meryl loves the Public! And can sing! And act! (No, really, trust me. She can.)
Somebody do some hocus-pocus really quickly and make this happen.
